Suggestion
&
Thailand is being my very first country to go abroad by myself. The experiences I had in the SEA- TEACHER program helped to shape me into the person I wish to be. Being on my own and not traveling with family or closed friend was very valuable to me as it forced me out of my comfort zone and helped me to build relationships with people. Moreover being an intern teacher gave me so much precious experiences to be remembered. I feel that this is a life-long lesson to learn that can help in future careers and other important interactions. After joining this program for almost 1 month, here I want to give the summary and suggestion.
Purposes of Practicum
Purposes of the practicum as it stated in the objectives of this program are to develop my teaching skills and pedagogy, increase my English skill also gain a broader world view. Additionally It has turned me into a way more open-minded person as I always try my best to understand the differences in many aspects including the teaching process, language, behavior, culture and even religion also gain my openness to diversity.
Procedure of Practicum
The procedure of this practicum is well planned. The first day was the orientation day, at that time all of the participants met and being intruduced with all mentors, buddy, lecturers also president of the host university. The next main activity was observation at school and also the teachers for a week. Then the next 3 weeks was teaching assistant, teaching practice, cultural exchange and the last farewell party for all participants, mentors, cooperative teachers also the coordinators of the host university.
Outcomes of Practicum
In joining this program, I got a lot of unforgettable and precious experiences. After I did a lot of observations and also teaching practice in an environment with different language and culture absolutely has given me chance to learn. I got a chance to improve my teaching skill through various activities at school and it help me to prepare myself being a good teacher soon. Additionally i got a chance to do the cultural exchange between Thai and Indonesian.
Challenges of Practicum
The challenges of the practicum I faced was the communication. Mostly Thailand people can not speak in English and the challenge is how to communicate with them. But through the helps from the buddies, English teacher at school it can help me communicate with students or other people, they also taught us some Thailand language. The other challenges was about the food. It was quiet hard to find halal foods. We need to find and check the labels also the ingredients of the food to make sure it is halal. But gratefully in VRU’s canteen, there is one and only Muslim food shop in it, so it help us a lot. These challenges taught me to keep learning, have an open minded, tolerant and be more respectful.
Overall Practicum
I will always be grateful I had a chance to be one of the participant in this program. This program taught me so many values of life and how to survive by myself. I met so many inspiring people, got a new lovely family from Thailand, Indonesia also other foreigner. This program also improve my teaching skills and my English communication skill. I couldn’t say thank you enough to SEAMEO for letting me become one of the lucky participant to join this program.I feel blessed.
Suggestions for Future Improvement
For future improvement I suggest for the host university to choose and divide the buddy for all of the participants well. Me and my friends in dormitory hard to connect with the buddy. I hope this program would be held in all of ASEAN countries.
